Backup to DVD goes to 61% and then goes no further even though it says it is backing up

I have a Dell XPS 9000. I want to backup files and everything works fine up until it reaches 61% and it simply goes no further, even after hours, but it continues to indicate it is being backed up. I receive no message to use a 2nd DVD nor an error message.
Interesting, the both times I did this it starts with backup already at 25%

Is the DVD proper( ie without any damage or scratches)?

File back up: Windows Backup allows you to make copies of data files for all people that use the computer.
You can let Windows choose what to back up or you can select the individual folders, libraries, and drives that you want to back up.

You may try with different DVD or DVD Drive and check if it works.

If the issue still persists then try performing SFC scan on the computer.

SFC /scannow is a super-useful command you can use in any Windows version.
When the SFC (System File Checker) command is used with the /scannow switch, the tool will scan all of the important Windows files on your computer and replace them as necessary.

Missing and corrupt operating system files (like many DLL files) are arguably the biggest cause of major Windows issues.
Considering that, plus the fact that SFC /scannnow is completely automatic and very easy to use, the tool should usually be one of your
first troubleshooting steps.

1.
Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow
2.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow
[The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.]
A message will appear stating that 'The system scan will begin'.
Be patient because the scan may take some time

If any files require a replace SFC will replace them.
You may be asked to insert yourWin7 DVD for this process to continue
4.
If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message "Windows resource protection did not find any             integrity violations"

5.
After the scan has completed, close the command prompt window, restart the computer and check.

If the issue still persists then perform a check disk and check for the issue.

To run check disk, you have to have Windows Vista DVD, boot the computer to Win RE from the elevated command prompt, and try to do a CHKDSK.
You can follow these steps to run CHKDSK :

1) Use the Windows Vista DVD to start the computer in Windows Recovery (WinRE).

2) In WinRE, open a command prompt.
To do this, follow these steps:
        On the Install Windows screen, select the appropriate Language to install, Time and

     currency format, and Keyboard or input method options, and then click Next.

3) Click Repair your computer.
4) Click the Vista installation that you want to repair, and then click Next.
5) Click Command Prompt.
     At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
     chkdsk drive: /f and chkdsk drive: /r.

Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost

Go to Start button.
Open Control Panel.
Go to Windows Error Reporting.
Click on System and Maintenance, then click Problem Reports and Solutions.
Next, click Change Settings located on the left side panel of the Problem Reports and Solutions window.
Select an option to configure how you want Windows to look for a solution to your problems. You may allow Windows to do it automatically or ask you every time to check if problem occurs.
Next, click the Advanced settings link.
Select Off to turn off Error Reporting.
