Attempt to print hangs before print dialog appears.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
Up until today, I had no problems printing to any of my printers (some local, most networked)
Now, I am having trouble printing.  Here are some details:
When I try to print a page from my browser (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, it doesn't seem to matter), I never get to the dialog box that allows me to choose the printer and print preferences.  In Chrome, it takes me to the page where I would normally
see a preview, but the preview never shows.  On all the browsers, this puts the browser into a not responding state.
When I try to print from Word (Starter 2010), or Libre Office, or Notepad++, they all go non-responsive before I ever see the dialog box to choose a printer, etc.
When I try to print from Notepad, I get the dialog box and can print the document (text file)
When I try to print a Test Page for my chosen printer from the Devices and Printers start menu item, I can print it.
I have tried updating to the absolute latest Windows Updates, stopping the print spooler, clearing out the queue, and restarting the print spooler, cleaning my system with Advanced Systemcare and CCleaner, with no change in behavior.

I have tried rebooting, with no change.
I do not believe this has anything to do with printer drivers because I had no trouble printing before, and because I don't even get to choosing the printer before the hang.  Plus, when I print to that printer from notepad and from the print test page
on the Devices and Printers area, it works.
I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials, and it gives me no indications of any malware.
I'm going crazy here, trying to get the simplest non-text file to print.
Can someone help?
