I have 4 PCs and am using XP on all of them. I started to look at upgrading the hardware for the PC I use for all my video creation. Since most new PCs cannot be gotten with XP installed I started reviewing what I would need for running Vista. I use
mainly Adobe commercial products for video creation, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, Encore. Searching through Microsoft's compatability lists, I found that NONE of my current Adobe products will run under Vista!!!!
Just to upgrade my Adobe products to versions that will run under Vista would cost me $1100!!! That is more then the new PC would cost! And there are some Adobe products like Pagemaker which do not even have an upgrade! And I have dozens of other applications
which may also have to be replaced. I also use an export plugin for Premiere to export the video to TMPGeng Plus encoder and I have no idea if the plugin or TMPGeng Plus will work.
Also, I haven't found anything in Vista that I have any use for! I organize all my media in directory structures which allows me to find anything I want without added software.
(in XP I disable Index Searching).
I DON'T LIKE the enhanced graphics in Vista.
Speed and simplicity is more important to me then "glitz".
So, unless System 7 addresses the compatability problem, I will stay with XP until it's last gasps.

It sounds like you should stay away from Vista, why purchase something you feel uncomfortable about.
You would be able to configure Vista settings to run at "Best Performance" rather than being pretty via Advanced System Settings in the Control Panel/ System.
You may be able to use Compatibility Modes to get your applications running. You have more chance with software than hardware (where drivers are no longer written in some cases).

If Compatibility Mode is of no use, then maybe Dual Booting or, running a Virtual Machine from within Vista is another consideration.

Anyway, Windows 7 in only a few months away, and in my opinion is a much better effort than Vista, but you may have the same type of compatibility problems with that as you expect to have with a Vista install.
To check for Windows updates. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer. If any updates are found, click Install updates.
Install the latest updates for Windows and for the program displaying the error. Note that the update for the program might be listed as an optional update on the Windows Update page.
