I have not purchased windows 7 yet.
 the dos apps I run now I add commands to autexect.nt and config.nt located in the widows system 32 directory.
 can I still find these files in xp mode in windows 7

There are a variety of modes, starting at Windows 95.
You should be able to run most 16-bit applications.
 
Assuming you can run the program on Windows XP, you might be able to run it.
If you meet the hardware requirements you can go ahead and try it out.

On running the System Update readiness Command, it will Detect & Replace Incorrect Registry data with the Correct one. Which may ultimately Solve Can I run dos apps in windows 7 xp mode? in Windows.

1. Open CMD as Administrator by Simply Right Clicking on Start button > Command Prompt (Admin).
2. Now Type or Copy paste "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth" and hit Enter,
